Popeyes Chicken – Race and Politics

"Popeyes Chicken and Chicken Mammy"
Popeyes Chicken Mammy

Popeyes Chicken should be ashamed of itself for the degrading and tired minstrel show put on by the “Chicken Mammy.” Ms. Annie as she’s called takes us back about a century on her chicken coonery antics. Believe it or not, the African-American community is divided on whether the commercial is racist or not. In some quarters of the community, the feeling is hey, “she’s making money and laughing all the way to the bank.” This writer is painfully aware, that some people will sell their soul for a dollar; no matter what the consequences are.

Should companies be held to a higher level of “social responsibility?” Where do we draw the line between funny and insulting? The Chicken Mammy’s antics hearkens back to a time most African-Americans would like to forget. The deplorable minstrel show era is one that is painful and dredges up the oppressive era of “Jim Crow” and brutal segregation that was mandated by law.

Hopkins – McNabb and Willful Ignorance

"House slave or field slave"
Class riff still strong in Black Community

Published on The Root (http://www.theroot.com)

McNabb vs Hopkins. It’s time to end the “house vs. field” debate among African Americans.

Here we go again. Just two months after ESPN’s The Fab Five documentary sparked a controversy involving Jalen Rose and Grant Hill, we’ve suffered another instance of black athletes sorting our dirty laundry in public. This time it’s boxer Bernard Hopkins, who claims in a recent Philadelphia Daily News article that Washington Redskins quarterback Donovan McNabb isn’t black enough.

“He’s got a suntan. That’s all,” said the boxer during press day at his gym. Hopkins further implied that McNabb’s privileged upbringing set him up for a rude awakening when the Philadelphia Eagles traded him to the Washington Redskins last year. “Why do you think McNabb felt he was betrayed? Because McNabb is the guy in the house, while everybody else is on the field. He’s the one who got the extra coat. The extra servings. ‘You’re our boy,’ ” Hopkins said, patting a reporter on the back to illustrate his point. “He thought he was one of them.”

Unions – Office – Politics and Facebook

Recovering Republican
Take our country forward - not back!

Social media is ubiquitous. Employees use their Facebook and Twitter accounts to keep up with family and friends, to network, to post music, to inform their online “community” of personal and/or social events, and, sometimes, to vent about their day on the job. What happens when one of their Facebook friends shares the online rant about a supervisor with said supervisor or someone else on the job? And what if the employer has a policy that prohibits employees from making “disparaging” remarks about their supervisor online? Can the employee be fired? The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) says “no”.

Donald Trump and The Blacks

Donald Trump and the Blacks
Donald Trump and the Blacks

“I have a great relationship with the blacks,” REALLY? So says Donald Trump in a recent radio interview. Of the potential candidates on the Republican side, Donald Trump was the one who could have taken votes away from Barack Obama in the 2012 election. Any political currency he had with the black community has been squandered on his lack of sensitivity.

The comment was no better than saying “those people.” It’s amazing to this writer how some politicians just don’t seem to get it. In a world where gaffes and blunders go viral in milliseconds thanks to the Internet, you would think one would be more careful.

Obama 2012 – Why He Will Get Re-elected

Article first published as Obama 2012 – Why He Will Get Re-elected on Technorati.

President Barack Obama
Can Pres Obama work with Republicans

Obama 2012! President Barack Obama will get reelected! Some on the right will take this prediction as political heresy. If the economy continues to improve, unemployment goes down and we save face in Libya, Obama will win reelection; barring anymore global catastrophes. The main reason Obama will win reelectionare the potential Republican candidates that will oppose him.

The electorate will ultimately vote their pocketbooks and their best interests; at least the sane ones will. The other tangible or intangible depending, on your point of view is Obama’s charisma and his squeaky clean (scandal proof) image. Love him or hate him, he is a fine father, husband, has superior intellect and is a man of unimpeachable integrity who seems to stay above the fray of petty partisan bickering. In the final analysis, people like those qualities in their leaders and trust them. Everyone realizes that President Obama inherited a mess unlike any of his predecessors. Two wars and an economy on the verge of total meltdown. All things considered, he [Obama] has done an admirable job. His ratings in the polls have been fair to good. If things continue to improve look for a second term. Let’s take a look at those who are vying for the GOP nod in 2012.

President Obama is a Natural-Born Citizen

Let’s all take a big deep cleansing breath, Pres. Barack Obama is a natural-born American citizen. All of this controversy surrounding President Obama is really getting nauseating. After a heated debate on the view today between Whoopi Goldberg and Donald Trump, and amidst much acrimony; the debate is still not settled. Whoopi Goldberg brought up a good point. When was the last time they asked a white president for his birth certificate? So why the urgency to see an Obama birth certificate?

What makes this notion insane regarding President Obama’s citizenship, is the fact that the vetting process is so intense, intrusive and thorough. Anyone with any shred of common sense has got to realize, that being the first black president not only was he vetted, they were probably trying to find any type of dirty laundry which would have disqualified then, candidate Obama.

Herman Cain – Who is he?

Herman Cain is Tea Party Favorite

Herman Cain

From all accounts the former CEO of Godfather’s Pizza is the embodiment of the American dream. He has come a long way to reach the promised land that all of us seek in America. Radical Republicans and the Supreme Court

American history is full of examples of disagreements with the Supreme Court. Nothing rings more true than the narrow interpretations of the 14th and 15th amendments to the United States Constitution. Separate but equal actually meant separate and inherently unequal.

Reconstruction is the historical period Immediately following the Civil War up until 1877 that allowed African Americans to enjoy a window of opportunity and enfranchisement; that slavery had denied them. Radical Republicans (Liberal Republicans) aggressively promoted the concept of complete emancipation i.e. complete equality with whites in public accommodation, voting rights and entering into legal contracts.
