American History and Slavery

Racist murderer
Dylan Roof racist who murdered 9 members of Mother Emanuel Church

American history is and will always be a touchy subject. This may seem cliché but it rings more true than not. Why is this so? It could be that the political heroes we idolize as children are exposed as being more flawed than we thought once we get to college classrooms. It could be that everyone’s ancestors in this country get separated into categories such as the oppressors and the oppressed or the enslaved and the slavers.

Then of course there is always the definitive “history is written by the winners” line. This could ring true for a lot of the standard history textbooks used in K-12 classrooms around the country. In regards to my own educational experience I always tell people I learned two histories growing up: the one they taught in the classroom and the one that was taught to me at home. My parents saw this as a necessity because my ancestors where the farthest thing from “winners” in the eyes of history. Therefore who better to teach the lessons of the oppressed than their descendants? While both of these lesson plans were vital to my upbringing, the history taught in my household is one I hold in much higher regard. I understand that the curriculum from the school was supposed to be inclusive and could not pander to any one demographic. Still, without my parent’s intervention I never would’ve had an appreciation for what African Americans had to go through in this country. Continue reading American History and Slavery

Donald Sterling

Racist comments
Racist Donald Sterling outed.

No one is going to argue that Donald Sterling is a despicable human being. He has a long track record of discrimination against Blacks and Latinos as a convicted slum lord in Los Angeles. There are already attempts to discredit the messenger, his long time mistress V. Stiviano. No matter where the recording came, it doesn’t lessen the damage that was done by [Stirling’s] racist comments.

It’s a curious irony that Sterling is the owner of an NBA franchise that has risen like the Phoenix of Greek mythology. A long time laughing stock of the NBA is now a contender. These allegations couldn’t have come at a worse time. The NBA is overwhelming African-American. His team is mostly African-American; not to mention that is mistress is bi-racial (African-American and Mexican-American)

Trayvon Martin

The elephant in the room

Trayvon Martin is the victim
Trayvon Martin

The issue of race has reared it’s head once again in the aftermath of the Trayvon Martin case. Regardless where you stand on this issue, we can’t ignore the fact that race is still a delicate and highly charged issue in American society.

Many feel that now that a black man is in the white house we are post-racial; NOT! If you believe that, you need to step away from the crack pipe. The Trayvon Martin case is proof that race still dominates much of the American experience.

Regardless of where you stand on the raging debate on the Trayvon Martin killing, one thing’s for certain, the homicide investigation was bungled and flawed from the outset. Just last evening (March 27th) a startling revelation has come to light. The investigator who was first on the scene of the killing of Mr. Martin recommended that Zimmerman be arrested and charged with manslaughter. The state’s attorney told the investigator to “stand down” and not arrest Zimmerman citing that there was not enough “evidence” for a conviction. Really?

Pat Buchanan: Suicide of a Superpower

Pat Buchanan is a racist
Pat Buchanan caters to racists

Pat Buchanan’s new book is raising eyebrows and a lot of controversy over his assertion that “white America” is losing it’s dominance. It’s the right-wings death rattle of the demographic changes in America. Within the next generation, the term minority will become an oxymoron.

America is becoming more brown and black and that some very concerned. It’s as if no one of color is competent enough to lead America back to better days. Let’s face it, American Exceptionalism is on the decline. China is an emerging power that could pose a financial threat to the United States.

The simple truth is, those who expouse a white supremacy ethos are not happy! As people of color all over the globe assert their independence, it challenges the status-quo. The days of “Leave it to Beaver” and “Father knows best” are over.

Latinos Obama and GOP

Cecilia Munoz
Cecilia Munoz, Dir Inter-Govt Affairs - White House

The 2012 election will be interesting indeed. With so much going on in the country and in the Congress at this point; where do we have time to talk about immigration? When the 2012 campaign ramps up into full gear, there are a few unresolved issues that will surface to the fore as things get going. Pres. Obama will have his hands full. There’s the nagging issue of what to do about immigration and how to appease Latino voters.

The Latino electorate does not trust Republicans and are frustrated with president Obama. In recent weeks president Obama made a trip which turns out to be a campaign stop in Puerto Rico. He’s the first president since Pres. Kennedy to visit the island. He was greeted with much fanfare and exuberance as the partisan Puerto Rican crowd showed President Obama affection and approval.

Popeyes Chicken – Race and Politics

"Popeyes Chicken and Chicken Mammy"
Popeyes Chicken Mammy

Popeyes Chicken should be ashamed of itself for the degrading and tired minstrel show put on by the “Chicken Mammy.” Ms. Annie as she’s called takes us back about a century on her chicken coonery antics. Believe it or not, the African-American community is divided on whether the commercial is racist or not. In some quarters of the community, the feeling is hey, “she’s making money and laughing all the way to the bank.” This writer is painfully aware, that some people will sell their soul for a dollar; no matter what the consequences are.

Should companies be held to a higher level of “social responsibility?” Where do we draw the line between funny and insulting? The Chicken Mammy’s antics hearkens back to a time most African-Americans would like to forget. The deplorable minstrel show era is one that is painful and dredges up the oppressive era of “Jim Crow” and brutal segregation that was mandated by law.

Barack Obama and Birthers

Article first published as Barack Obama and Birthers on Technorati.

Birthers lose Obama wins
Obama was born in America!

Barack Obama is an American citizen! Enough already with the kooky birthers and their insane charges leveled against President Obama. Perhaps they would be happy if the state of Hawaii could produce pictures or video showing Obama as he came out of the womb with the placenta attached and Don Ho in the background playing Hawaiian music on his ukulele.

We have three wars going, a fragile economy, nuclear disaster in Japan and air traffic controllers taking siestas placing us all in danger. Come on people, we have much bigger fish to fry. Given the hand Barack Obama was dealt, he is doing an admirable job, all things considered.

The Republican Minstrel Show

Michele Bachmann is she bat shit?
Michele Bachmann is scarier than Sarah Palin!

And you thought minstrels were only in black face? Not so, between Sarah Palin and Michele Bachman, high tech minstrelsy is here, and boy, it’s hilarious. The Republican Minstrel show goes on ad hominem. It’s the minstrel show to beat all minstrel shows! You just never know what’s going to come out of their mouths. In all fairness to Sarah Palin, I think Michele Bachmann, the Tea Party darling, is the crazier of the two.
