Trump and Race

Trump has been in office less than a year and the country is a disaster. One thing I will give him credit for, is forcing Americans to discuss race! Race has long been the 800 lb gorilla in the room. In the past, we have done practically everything to avoid ever discussing this uncomfortable topic. Now that Trump is in office, it’s impossible to avoid discussing race.

He as insulted gold star families, he was practically coddling white supremacists in Charlottesville, Virginia stating that there were good people on “both sides.” However, when it came to black ballplayers in the NFL protesting racism and police brutality they were “sons of bitches.” This action only exacerbated an already volatile situation spurring even more protest.

Fast forward to the most recent event with the callous “condolence call” to the widow of Sgt La David Johnson. Just when you thought he couldn’t stoop any lower, he finds a way to go even lower. It’s hard to know where the basement is with this guy. Trump seems to be devoid of empathy, common sense and humanity.

Trump supporters seem to fall into one of two categories. They are very embarrassed by him and find it hard to admit they made a mistake in judgement. The other half supports him no matter how insane he seems or acts. Trump makes Obama look like Abraham Lincoln. There are many of us who miss Obama and his presidential manner.

The most frightening thing about the Trump presidency is how he has emboldened racists and their racism. While racism has always been in American since the founding of the republic, it laid dormant until Trump came on the scene. Nazis and other white supremacists in Virginia were so emboldened they didn’t even bother to hide their faces.

Trump’s position on race is very clear when you look at the appointment of Jeff Sessions as his Attorney General. Session’s record is very clear on civil rights and race in Alabama. Betsy Devos, his pick as Secretary of Education has shown her ignorance when she showed how clueless she was over HBCU’s (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) and how they came to be. Let’s not forget Steve Bannon, the architect of the Alt-right and editor of Breitbart.

Hate crimes have increased exponentially since Trump has come into office. Racists who use to lie dormant have become more brazen. When Trump gets called out on his racism or any other mistake he makes, he comes angry and resorts to personal attacks. Most decent people are ashamed and embarrassed by him.

Trump ran his campaign on a promise that he would build a wall to keep Mexicans out of our country. The wall didn’t stop the shooter in Las Vegas or the savages in Charlottesville, Virginia. Most people of color are not worried about Mexicans or Muslims. We are more worried about gun toting, second amendment yahoos who have been emboldened by Trump.

The chasm of racial disparity is greatest when it comes to guns and who owns them. There is a tremendous difference in race and how it’s applied, in the gun debate. Watching any coverage on the gun debate, it’s not hard to come to the conclusion that guns and the second amendments is a “whites only” right. Gun ownership is cloaked in white privilege. The genesis of the second amendment had racist intent. Ostensibly, it was to raise a militia to fight oppression. Militia also included slave patrols( a concession given to southern states) when the amendment was ratified, monitoring plantations and finding runaway slaves. Whites on plantations were out numbered by blacks by 20 to 1 or more. Having guns meant you could put down servile insurrection, something whites constantly lived in fear of.

Just look at how the media covers mass shootings. Most mass shooters are disgruntled white man. The media opines as to how this could have happened. When the shooter is white, it’s an aberration. No discussion on his race and how that could have played a part in the shooting. Conversely, if a person of color were to commit such and act, the narrative would be completely different. And we all know it!

In conclusion, my hope is that Trump gets impeached or resigns so our country can return to some sense of normalcy. We need a uniter, not a divider as Trump has proven over and over. We are the laughing stock of the world and it didn’t use to be that way. I long for the days of having a sane president, regardless of party.
